29 September 06 11:07 PM | adrian | with no comments

Just in case you haven't "got it" yet, Zune is the iPod-killer Microsoft released earlier this month. The first Zune can be pre-ordered in Amazon.com for US$249.99 (S&H excluded, of course).

Zune is available in three colors; White, Brown, and Black.

Also according to Amazon, they will deliver it on November 14 this year. I hope I can get one for my birthday! :D

DVD Burning Solution for Windows Vista
28 September 06 11:53 PM | adrian | with no comments

Since my favorite burning application, Nero Burning ROM does not work in Windows Vista, my burning capability is crippled. The only application that can burn without problem is the built-in Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player burning features.

Also, there is no drive emulator application that runs in Windows Vista.

Until now.

PowerISO does both jobs above. But it's shareware, though the only limitation is when you work with .ISO files. You can't save anything above 300Mb, but you can use the burner and drive emulator flawlessly.

PowerISO can be downloaded from www.poweriso.com.

No Support for PPC 2002 in Windows Vista
22 September 06 08:52 AM | adrian | with no comments

Yes, you read that right. Most PocketPC 2002 are no longer supported in Windows Vista. And since you don't have access to ActiveSync anymore (Windows Vista uses Sync Center instead of ActiveSync for all external device partnership), you may lose support for nearly all other older devices, too.

But if your PPC have memory extension slot, you can buy those memory cards and sync it using card reader OR the PPC itself (provided that it exposes methods to manipulate the memory card).

What Windows Mobile version are you using?

Posting from OneNote 2007 B2TR
19 September 06 10:07 AM | adrian | with no comments

OK, so finally I have installed the Technical Refresh to my primary machine. This is the fifth machine, and the results better than others (up until now).

Clarifying my previous post about B2TR, the problem is mostly installation. You can see the list of Known Issues, and most of them would be installation. So if you want a perfect install of B2TR, here's what you should do (in order):

  1. Install all Office 2007 B2 components you need.
  2. Install the main Office 2007 B2TR (the 495Mb one).
  3. Install other Office 2007 B2TR.

P.S.: I've tried posting from OneNote, instead, OneNote sends to Word which publishes to blog.

P.S.S: Oh, and it would be best if you upgrade everything to B2TR, not part B2 part B2TR. That will create some problem.

INDC Blogs Updates
17 September 06 07:58 AM | adrian | with no comments

Well, it was already due since a long time ago... But finally, the guys from INDC have updated the blog software. Now we're running Community Server 2.1, baby!

I've checked out my new blog (http://geeks.netindonesia.net/blogs/adrian), and it seems that most of the links are gone. You can find the still functioning read-only web version at the old address (http://blogs.netindonesia.net/adrian/), or you can download a OneNote file containing all the post, none the comments (available soon after I got a file space here).

On another note, I'll try posting from Office 2007, they have nifty features to write a blog from inside the application. But a word of warning: DO NOT INSTALL Office 2007 BETA 2 TECHNICAL REFRESH! It will screw up your computer very badly and change your documents to be unreadable by previous version (even Beta 2), especially for Word and OneNote documents. My piece of advice, stick with Beta 2, unless Microsoft posted a "Technical Refresh" Refresh... :D

Ah, the joy and pain of using Beta softwares.

New Article
09 September 06 07:03 PM | adrian | with no comments

I have written a new article about another exploit for (some cataloging application). The application is written on .NET Framework 2.0. Here's the link: http://blogs.netindonesia.net/adrian/articles/10918.aspx.

Unfortunately, the article page is down for unknown reason (not unusual in INDC Blogs). So wait a day or two until it's up.

Windows Vista is Release Candidate!
04 September 06 07:17 PM | adrian | with no comments

Finally, the RC1 (build 5600) is rolled out of Redmond. I've noticed a lot of improvement in both Pre-RC1 and RC1 since July CTP. Some notable things are:

  • Installation is a breeze. My typical machine installed RC1 in exactly 30 minutes.
  • Search Indexer stability is well improved. From “almost always” to “nearly ever” crash.
  • New icons and polish. Nice artistic job!

But the bad things are:

  • Intel D865PERL drivers are not updated yet. Silly sound problems from Build 5384 still exists up until now.
  • RC1 seems to be a little less stable than Pre-RC1.

Overall system performance have also been improved. I'm now productive even in 512Mb machines.

The related WinFX, oops, .NET Framework 3.0 is also ready to download. Although VS Extensions are still due next week.

P.S.: For all of you who haven't got any access to the latest version since Beta 2, fear not, MS will open up the RC1 to public next week. Prepare your download bandwith until then, it's a whopping 2.5Gb download.

P.S.S.: Also on the edge is Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh due next two weeks. Wow, what a month of good releases from Redmond. Keep up the good work, guys!

P.S.S.S: I'll be writing a small book about Windows Vista new features. Hopefully it'll be available before the formal launch early next year!
