Mouse and Cheese are coming to Australia - QUT Cheeseday

Have you ever seen this picture before?

Yupe! Microsoft Mouse and Cheese were in action in Raffles Place, Singapore. They're promoting the "Year of Microsoft Mouse". Many people were attracted to these Mouse and Cheese.

And Now! It's storming Oz!!

A couple weeks ago I received two big packages from Microsoft. They just finished their long journey from Singapore-Sydney-Brisbane (Thanks to Diana who provided this opportunity for us). Yep, they're Mouse and Cheese. In this case, We used them to promote both It's Not Cheating promo and the coming Microsoft event in Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

We started handing over the It's Not Cheating CDs in the morning. With the excited feeling, we stood at the outside of University gate located at Gardens point. And then people started to pass the gate and we started handing over the CDs.

The same song were sung by people passing the University entrance. People got attracted with Mouse and Cheese indeed. Some people said "Well done, Mouse and Cheese". Other girls said "Hey, look at mouse and cheese". Even, some of them took some photos of us secretly. These things made us more confident to promote the materials (Although, I wore the mouse up side down, and no one noticed it !! LOL).

It only took 20 minutes for us to finish around 500 CDs and Promo flyers. That's very fabulous! We're hoping that this successful event will affect the coming events. Indeed, Mouse and Cheese will be hitting again sometime in the future. We've an amazing idea on these cute mouse and cheese.

And also, for any Ozy MSP who is interested in using these things can poke me. I'll circulate them so that Mouse and Cheese will not only storm Brisbane but also other cities in Australia. Indeed, they will help you to attract large audience!

PhD Candidate, I am now

At last, after having a very long seminar (50-min presentation) I finished it. Yupe, all of my two-month effort has been paid two days ago, when the panels said that I did a good job. Well, although I was quite disappointed by myself which didn't do well in the presentation part, but that's why they call PhD as a research apprentice.

I had not many questions. The questions were around my research direction and boundary. I was expecting that someone could give some valuable feedbacks on my method. But, it didn't happen. Well, regarding to research direction, I got some good feedbacks I guess. Specifically, now, I have to consider seriously for my case studies, and start very soon, or otherwise I'll be trapped in this crazy course (never get a thesis done).

Well, I'll write later... I'm going to take a week off. see u then ;)

It's Not Cheating Competition Rule Changed

Beat me up on It's Not Cheating Game, you'll get one Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 FREE ! (This is worldwide)

If you go to It's not cheating web site (www.itsnotcheating.com.au), you'll see that there's a little addictive game. The game play is pretty much similar to Mario bross. You have coins to be collected, some enemies, and mail box representing the end point. The only difference is that this game does not have level. Only one level.

Right, now here's the challenge for you. From this game, go to the scoreboard. Yep, call me the cheat street nerd, but for sure this game really pushes you to think out of the box. That's why I really want to share with you guys. The best part of it is, Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 and cute 1 Gigs USB are waiting for you guys.

THE CHALLENGE

~~The challenge is to beat me on the scoreboard. As you can see, my name is on the 8th place.~~

Since there's a technical problem on the scoreboard which removed the first 12 people and obviously my name also (does the system deserve for the 1st prize? J), the challenge is modified to be:

Beat my 1942 score!!

As you can see below, my score is 1942, and until now, there's no single person can break this score.

If you ~~remove my name from 8th place~~ beat my score, The Microsoft office will be yours!!!

Or, if you enter your name on the scoreboard lower than my position (say you get 9th place or 12th place), The USB flash drive will be yours!!

WHO CAN ENTER?

Everyone!! That means this is NOT only for Australian residents.

How to Play

Step 1

Download this registration program (which actually helps you in identifying yourself when claiming for the prize).
Enter your nick name, last name and email address and click generate button. That will generate information needed by you later on.

Step 2

Copy and paste the registration text on the registration program. Post it as a comment on this blog (see at the bottom example). You have to tell me that you're taking a part of this competition by posting the registration text on this blog post, otherwise, I won't be able to identify you and you can't claim your prize.

Step 3

Play the game as many as you want. When you have a chance to post your score on the scoreboard, use the scoreboard text provided by the registration text. This is the only way for me to identify you. So, remember you have to use the scoreboard text instead of typing by yourself.

Step 4 [NEW]

Immediately contact my email at arnold(dot)wiliem(at)student-partners.com to claim the prize. I'll send you some clarification questions to make sure that you did the actual game. The questions could be around tips & tricks to get that score. I have to do this since there could be another technical problem which could alter the scoreboard.

Step 5

Claim your prize when you beat one of the challenges. The correspondence will use the email address you supplied in the registration text. Any postage cost incurred for delivering the prize within Australia will be covered by me. However, the winner has to cover any postage cost for overseas delivery.

FAQ

When this competition ends? Theoretically, the competition will on until the period of itsnotcheating program ends. Nevertheless, it will end when we have the winners.
I don't know how to play this game. Where do I start? See help section on the game, that will help you a lot.
Wicked! How did you get that score? There are many tricks in this game increasing your score dramatically. The idea is think out of the box. I'll post some of the tricks soon, so that you can have similar-but-slightly-lower score than mine.
Is this competition organised by itsnotcheating team? Nope, It's hosted by me, nevertheless I was so lucky that they help me to provide the prizes.

From Indonesia to Australia

As some of you may know that I moved from Indonesia to Australia last year for pursuing my PhD degree in computer vision in Queensland University of Technology. Effectively I was off from MSP activities at that time. And after long await, I got a MSP acceptance letter from Microsoft Australia. I started being an Oz MSP this year.

Being an MSP in Oz, is quite challenging for me. The culture is different. Language is different. People in here, tend to be more active and open. Open discussion is usually more often happened in Q&A session. Sometimes, I couldn't catch up with the discussion well. This is maybe because the accent is different from what I have learned before. There are a lot of things I need to catch up in order to do this task smoothly. But, I take that challenge in the admist of my heavy work load as a PhD student. I believe this is a very good opportunity for me to learn something new. Also, the best part of it is that the message is still the same. The main MSP's business is, how you inspire people.

Okay, enough for introduction. Now, I just went home from Ozy MSP Bootcamp 2008 in Sydney. It was a fantastics experience. I still could feel the same atmosphere as I got in Indonesia. Yes, indeed, that's techie talk. We talked about Visual Studio, C#, XNA Game SDK, XBox, ASP.NET, MS Office, Ajax, you name it. Their enthusiasm dragged me in. They're very warm, crazy, smart, geeky, inspiring, and funny. Each of them has 'WOW' thing that inspires me. Like for example, there's an MSP from Western Australia. I think he's quite knowledgable in techie hardcore. After he sat, and then he started talking valuable information about techie things. Another example is that MSP who comes back to uni as an undergrad student after working as an IT consultant for 10 years. He's very insighful and experienced. There're many more. I wish I had a faster speaking ability so that I could catch up with the conversation.

So What's on the Bootcamp. It was in Microsoft Sydney Australia office. The office is around 1.5 hour from airport. The office is absolutely bigger and more spacious than BEJ supplied with Big Biztro where you can order some food, capucino, coffee or hot choco (my fave). First Phil from Atomic magazine dropped in, and then it's continued with Office Live meeting demo. Oh btw, the bootcamp was in boardroom which is very spacious and luxury and big. It has a multi-view camera which I've never seen before. It's great to see how it works. Lastly, we had a session with Diana Lam about It's Not cheating (A program giving an Office Ultimate for only 75 AUD for academic people instead of paying 1300 AUD). That's for day one. Well, we still had a dinner in Northen Hotel. Too bad, I got a little bit drank there. We started on 10 O'clock on day two. Nothing special in the activities except the lunch :P.

What does PhD mean to me?

Facts about PhD I found so far:

It's a journey of your life
It's not a course that you can finish it after certain of time
Being PhD student, won't make you more geek than before (for sure, believe me)
It's not about how deep your research is. It's all about networking and how to communicate with other.
There's a chance for you to be a God Father in your area.
It's 24 hour job. Don't think of it, if you want to be a 9-to-5 worker.
You will be more religious than before.
All ages are welcome to be a PhD student. (it happens at here)
It's divided into three stages.

First stage (one that still fresh and happy to be a PhD student)
Mid stage (one that knows his topics, and very hectic in preparing papers, conferences, etc)
Last stage (one that wants to get rid of it as soon as possible) - this stage is divided into two categories

PhD expectant: One that has got his thesis in printing machine, smiling to everybody, counting his last day
PhD (Permanent Head Damage): Don't know how to do in his research. Don't know where is his finish line. Trapped. (geez, I heard many horror stories for this type of last stage)

I met many fellows here having problem with their eyes. Hopefully I won't get it.

Conclusion so far: Just like in athletic competition. You know the start line, you have to not only run fast but safe but define your finish line for yourself as well.

Changing Dictionary Content on PocketPC

In Pocket PC, word completion feature is very effective in decreasing typing time. Especially when our pocket PC doesn't have keyboard, so that we have to use our stylus all the time.

The problem comes when we mistakenly type a word. The wrong word will show up every time since it has been memorized by our lovely ppc.
