A full speed ahead of 3G in this afternoon! Is it real?

I was in the middle of downloading screencast from Channel9 of MSDN and also finishing my part 2 blog.

To my surprise, the 3G connection went so fast! Many thanks to my XL 3G for this connection:

Before this, I always complained to them about how slow it was.

But right after that, I test the real speed using intel bandwidth test:

It looks like I only have a quick surge of 3G speed. Well.. For this speed, it's still slower thean my ISDN connection at home. But, anyway, it's fun to test the real speed. Also, maybe I should sample more test.

I have tested it again many times, and this is what I got an average of 72kbps out of 5 times testing:

So, what I got is a quick surge of 3G speed. Has any of you experienced this phenomenon too?

I've been using IM3, Mentari (prepaid sim card) and even Matrix for about one month...the average bandwith that i got is 250-350 kbps and 30-40 kbps for download when connection is using 3G. We can choose connection profile we preferred with, for volume based the cost you have to pay is Rp.1/Kb, but if you want per time based the cost is Rp.100/minute...so XL 3G or Indosat based 3G :)

Thanks for your comment! FYI: all test above is in Surabaya. Which is by default, the less priority of telco infrastructure development priorities compared to Jakarta and Bandung.

But AFAIK, XL has data access promotional package for Rp 100000 per month for data volume of 250MB. The nice thing about this offer is for additional excess, you only pay another Rp 0.5 per KB. This is a sure deal.

I've tried Matrix, and matrix is speedier: on my test, it moves at 100kbps minimum and 130kbps on average. This is good, but their data packet promo is more expensive than XL. Additional bandwidth will cost you Rp 0.8 / KB.

Have you ever been try to use IM3 prepaid card in Surabaya? When i move to Garut city area coverage from Bandung the indosat 3G was not detected by my usb modem, it can only detect GPRS connection...but when i tested the bandwith i become suprise, the average bandwith is about 150 kbps, and 20 kbps for downloading...anyway thanks for your info, by now i'm still comparing the bandwith speed from all of provider...

I've tested IM3 prepaid in Surabaya. To my surprise, it's slower than Matrix! Using Matrix, I can get download speed for 125kbps and upload speed of 64kbps. Using IM3, I can only get average 95kbps download speed, 30kbps upload speed.

Despite the common fact of 3G is fast, it's not in a real world view. 3G is not symmetry in download and upload. Real word upload speed of original 3G is maxed to 64kbps

Symmetrical data connection is available on HSUPA, the next evolution of HSDPA. HSUPA emphasizes on uplink speed.
