Maybe it's just an old tip but I just want to reiterate it.
Basically, try to use [https] instead of [http] when acessing gmail because using [https] your communication line is encrypted using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) technology. So practically, you can (or perhaps should) access Gmail securely using the following address:
https://gmail.google.com OR https://mail.google.com/mail
instead of
http://gmail.google.com OR http://mail.google.com/mail
