  • Some random Silverlight 2.0 FAQ

    Today FAQ sections from Silverlight 2.0 in my class conducted in Microsoft Singapore :

    1.How to repeat video in Silverlight 2.0 in C# code?

    in page.xaml:
    <MediaElement x:Name="PapiChanVideo"
                              Margin="19,0,0,82"
                              VerticalAlignment="Bottom"
                              Source="Video/14FtWavesMexico.wmv" MediaEnded="PapiChanVideo_MediaEnded"
                              Stretch="Fill"
                              HorizontalAlignment="Left"
                              Height="146"
                              Width="238"/>

    and the next step under C#
      private void PapiChanVideo_MediaEnded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
            {
                PapiChanVideo.Stop();
                PapiChanVideo.Play();
            }

    2. Is it possible to generate a Style in App.xaml without mentioning TargetType?
    No.

    3. What is the meaning of star in width="5*" or width="10*" while you define a rowdefinition?
    This means that this is a relative value to the total height or width of the Grid that these belong to.
    So if you have two rows and the first row has a height of 5* and the second row has a height of 10*,
    then the Grid will try and keep the second row at twice the height of the first row, based on the available space
    and the space requested by the controls in the rows.
    If I would change the second row to 5* then the Grid will try to keep the rows at the same height.

    4. How do we remove the column filler in a datagrid if we only have 2data columns but it looks like there are 3 columns generated?
    So this is actually a column filler, because while you define a grid in absolute numbers it will generate a filler(so it will looks like 3
    column eventhough you have only 2 columns).This sample code will generate column filler:

    <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical">
                        <TextBlock Text="Horse Race Results" />
                        <myData:DataGrid x:Name="dgRaces"
                                         AutoGenerateColumns="False"
                                         Height="140"
                                         Width="220"
                                         BorderThickness="0">
                            <!-- DataGrid Column definitions go here -->
                            <myData:DataGrid.Columns>
                                <myData:DataGridTextColumn Binding="{Binding Place}" Header="Place" />
                                <myData:DataGridTextColumn Binding="{Binding HorseName}" Header="HorseName" />
                            </myData:DataGrid.Columns>
                        </myData:DataGrid>
                    </StackPanel>

    because in a data call Place and HorseName , we dont define the absolute number based on grid, so the next code will resolve the issue

           <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical">
                        <TextBlock Text="Horse Race Results" />
                        <myData:DataGrid x:Name="dgRaces"
                                         AutoGenerateColumns="False"
                                         Height="140"
                                         Width="220"
                                         BorderThickness="0">
                            <!-- DataGrid Column definitions go here -->
                            <myData:DataGrid.Columns>
                                <myData:DataGridTextColumn Binding="{Binding Place}" Header="Place" Width="100"  />
                                <myData:DataGridTextColumn Binding="{Binding HorseName}" Header="HorseName" Width="120"/>
                            </myData:DataGrid.Columns>
                        </myData:DataGrid>

                    </StackPanel>

    (so we only need to add the absolute width in our data binding to make sure there are no filler for in the blank area of the grid)

  • Application Compatibility Features at windows 7

    If you are actually interested in this, you can simply go to microsoft connect (connect.microsoft.com) and find some slides there for a better understanding about which is compatible , which one is not in Windows 7. The demo tools can be found in Chris Jackson's blog

    I attended the training in Singapore, the topic was carried by Mr. Heinrich Gantenbein, and he introduced the power of Sysinternals which is very useful if Task Manager is not enough for you anymore to detect all the process and services that runs in our machine! But what I like the most itself is actually ZoomIt (which is very useful for presenting your presentation,but you don't have blackboard around you).

    Try ZoomIt to do the drawing while you need blackboard for presentation!

    I got this malware on my machine last week while I tried to run my FaceBook on Firefox (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6765488 )

    This linescan6 malware will give you prompt that all of your HDD are infected by Trojan(i had like around 57 trojan on C and some trojans on drive D.), and it also prompts you to download binary files

    FED UP!  I tried to download my Forefront Client and tried to install it as a standalone (without server) in my vista x64 machine.

    Steps:

    1. Open command prompt(type cmd on your start menu)

    2. Redirect your cmd  to folder of Forefront client folder. example: C:\Users\xxxxxx\Desktop\en_forefront_client_security_x86_x64_cd_x13-62435\CLIENT\X64

    3. Type clientsetup.exe /NOMOM

    4. Update your latest Forefront updates from internet. (updates need to be run on IE) :)

    Report Authoring with Report Builder 2.0

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services (SSRS) introduces many new features and enhancements that increase the reporting capabilities of people who develop reporting solutions.
    The Report Builder 2.0 window is designed to help you easily organize your report resources and quickly build the reports you need. The design surface is at the center of the window, with the Ribbon above and the Report Data, Grouping, and Properties panes to the left, below, and right. The design surface is where you add and organize your report items. The Ribbon organizes traditional menu items into categories that you can easily find and use. The panes help you to select and organize your report resources, and change report item properties.

    not bad at all. IE 8 has new Developer Tools without us, need to install further extra developer tools like the previous version.

    It is located under Tools-Developer Tools, or just press F12 to show it.

    Besides, it also has Compatibility View on its address bar, to correct the view for website that is actually compatible for the previous version of IE.

  • Windows Live Messenger error code 80048820

    Error code 80048820 usually occurs when there is a problem with the .NET Messenger service. one or more of the servers providing it might be down or having problems, with as result that you can no longer sign in. This normally won't take longer then a few minutes/hours. For more information you can check the .NET Messenger Service Status

    When you start Windows Live Messenger you cannot sign in, and you get error code 80048820 along with the message:

    We were unable to sign you into Windows Live Messenger at this time. Please try again later.

    Error code: 80048820
    Extended error code: 80048412

    Please note that the Service Status is known to not always be very accurate, if problems do appear the best thing to do is wait them out. Surely there are many other very interesting things to do. If the error keeps bothering you for over a few days there are some more things you can try below.

    Other steps that might help

    Check if the time and date on your computer are set correct, as it might confuse Messenger. To verify if they are, double-click the clock at the bottom right of your screen, click ok once/if everything is adjusted right.

    If the error continues to appear it is most likely because the Windows digital signatures system is damaged or corrupt. To resolve this you will have to register several dll files that are required for Messenger. You can do this automatically by running a batch file we created or if you prefer by executing the commands yourself.

    further details can be found http://www.imzers.com/msn/solve/error-code-80048820

  • Virtual PC Console Dissapear

    Have any concern about VPC Console dissapearing from your screen? here is the solution.

    VPC stored it's configuration in the following file:

    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Virtual PC\Options.xml

    Within that XML file, find the following codes:

     <window>

    - <console>
      <height type="integer">256</height>
      <left_position type="integer">4294935296</left_position>
      <top_position type="integer">4294935296</top_position>
      <visible type="boolean">false</visible>
      <width type="integer">367</width>
      </console>

    The values that were being used for "left_position" and "top_position"...

    4,294,935,296 = 0xFFFF8300

    Expressed as a 32-bit signed integer, this is the same as -32,000. which might cause the hidden stuff from the screen.

    Resetting these to 0 fixed the issue.
