3G on The Road

With LiveWriter and Chiwis, now I have an easy way to post blogs with inline images. Since my last post about 3G, I only use Indosat's 3G to get connected, at home, in the office or on the road. I use a USB Huawei datacard that support HSDPA (speed 3.6Mbps) I have got from Indosat. This is the connection status of the 3G connection.

The actual quality of the 3G connection will mainly depend on how good the signal you receive from a BTS. So, it will depend on your location, and also whether you are in a building or on the road. A very nice feature of 3G is that it is smart enough to switch over to operate in lower GPRS or 2G mode when there are no 3G signal available without being disconnected, and the 3G mode of operation will be resumed as soon as the 3G signal become available again. This feature is very important especially if you are on the road. The mode of operation is indicated with a LED on the datacard. Blue flash means 3G and green flash means 2G. I managed to capture this change of operation mode and also the signal strength from the monitoring serial port of the datacard. To be able to track and visualize it, I have created a small GPS application that track the active mode of operation (3G or GPRS), and the signal strength.  In the picture, the larger the tracking circle diameter the higher the signal level, the blue color of the circle represent the preferred 3G mode, the green one represent the GPRS mode of operation, and the darker the color the stronger the signal. The location where the tracking is done is around Simprug/Permata Hijau area.

What about Sudirman area? The 3G signal is much better in this area.

And the most? west part of Jakarta is already covered with Indosat 3G signal as recorded here. The tracking is done for Senayan, Permata Hijau and Pos Pengumben area.

One may ask if the quality of 3G network is already at the level as it is advertised on the television. My answer for this, based on my experience with data only 3G connection, is that we are not yet on that level. There are much much more efforts needs to be done by operators to get in to that level.

I agree about your last statement about the quality of 3G network. In Surabaya, the problem is quite the same. 3G coverage is not covering large part of Surabaya region. The fact is, I've tried using Telkomsel and XL, and they have averaged connection below 180kbps. The real everyday connection speed is still far below the advertised (or promised?) speed. Although the quality of video call is quite adequate, we need more than just video call. Fast internet connection is still quite a 3G feature that draws a lot of attention and curiosity to try and harness. My friend from a large telecom industry in the US (one of Bell companies) told me that one of the main obstacle of maintaining high speed of 3G is the available frequency slots, frequency permissions, and regulations. In the end, we have to admit that Indonesia is still a baby in this are of high industry regulations. Government's lack of proper understanding in this industry is quite severe, but it's showing a progress also. Meanwhile, I'm afraid we have to stick with 3G, not the real 3.5G of HSDPA. Also one thing more worth questioning, do Indosat, Telkomsel and XL really have enough bandwidth to serve broadband HSDPA? Only time and 3G users will tell. Eriawan

Indosat has made a lot of improvements in their 3G area coverage as well as the quality of service it

My Indosat 3G USB HSPDA modem hangs or the conenction hangs even if there is still quite a good strong signal. I am using Vista business which may be ther problem. Every time it hangs it stil shows a connection but both my YIM and Skype stop working and disconnect and i can send mail but not receive at all. I have to disconnect, unplug the 3G USB modem then wait a minute and start up the Huawei HSDPA software then connect the USB modem and connect again. Most of the time this works but sometimes it doesn't and i have to do a laptpop shutdown/restart. This is very frustrating to say the least. oh and by the way, i forgot to mention that i had the same problem with the Huawei PCMCIA card as well.

Is anyone else experiencing the same problems?

I am in Bali by the way

It is not Vista issues, and it is not related to Signal strength. It happened not only in Bali, it happened in Jakarta too. I have experienced the same syndrome in the last 6 months. Now I won't recommend indosat 3g if you need connection stability. Is it due to the available bandwidth becomes saturated and oversubscribed?  I don't know.

You are not alone. May be it's time to look for other better alternatives.

anyone?
