My e-mails Mysteriously Disappeared from Outlook Express Inbox Folder, Can I get them back?

There are times that you may lost a year or more of your email messages from your Outlook Express inbox folder. It can happen without a warning and it actually happened this weekend on my ex GF notebook. There are some articles on Microsoft site that suggest what to do when your inbox folder become corrupted. It suggests to compact the email folder. WARNING: If you don’t want to lost your emails from your inbox forever, I suggest that you do not follow the suggestion from the Microsoft site, DO NOT COMPRESS the folders now.

There are two cases that may cause the disappearance of emails from the inbox folder or what ever email folder you may have in Outlook Express.

1. Deleting the message
When you delete messages let say from your inbox folder, it will disappear from the list, but actually the message is still there. In outlook express, the emails in each folder are stored in a file named folder.dbx. Emails deleted from inbox will still be in the inbox.dbx, but it is tagged as deleted and the content will be changed a little. The deleted messages will still be there until it is compressed/cleaned.

2. Folder.dbx file is corrupted
Some time when you have a bad day, your inbox.dbx may become corrupted. This may happen when the file inbox.dbx becomes too large. If you keep all your emails from the last 10 or 5 years all in the inbox folder, the chance that it become corrupted become higher.

If you experience one of these cases what can you do to get the disappeared messages back?

First, backup the corrupted inbox.dbx by copying it to other folder, so you can always back in time if something unexpected happened during the rescue operation.

1. If you accidentally delete emails from your inbox, you can always find the deleted messages in Deleted Items folder in outlook express. If you accidentally also delete it from Deleted Items, the message is seems to be permanently deleted. As I said before, it is not. It is still in the .dbx file and you just need a tool to recover from it. Tools like Iolo Search and Recover may help. It can recover deleted Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Thunderbird, and Eudora e-mail. But it CAN NOT recover the missing emails due to mail folder.dbx corruption. That is why we need to look at other tools.

2. If you don’t know how your last year emails disappeared without track from your inbox, then it may be because the mail folder inbox.dbx becomes corrupted. Fortunately there are tools that can recall the disappeared emails from its hiding place. This can be done only under one condition: You HAVE NOT follow the suggestion on the Microsoft site to compact you email folders since the corruption.

3. This are the steps you can follow

a. Download and install the tools from: http://macallan.club.fr/SETUP/OutLookExpressExtraction.zip
b. Exit from Outlook Express.
c. Copy the corrupted folder inbox.dbx from C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{SOME-GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\ to other folder, let say c:\inbox.dbx
d. Rename the original inbox.dbx in the C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{SOME-GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\  directory to inbox-corrupted.dbx
e. Run the Macallan Outlook Express Extraction from your start menu or from your desktop, open the c:\inbox.dbx file. It will take some times depend on the size of the .dbx file (or the number of emails), be patient.
f. The extracted emails will be listed, now you can choose to extract all emails from menu Extractions. The extracted emails will be saved in directory c:\inbox\. Now open this folder in explorer.
g. Open Outlook express and point to inbox folder which is now empty because we have renamed the original inbox.dbx to inbox-corrupted.dbx
h. Copy all the files except the .log file from within the folder c:\inbox and (drag)paste it in the inbox folder in Outlook Express. Be patient, it will take some times, depends on the number of emails being processed.
i. Now smile, I hope your emails are back by now.

4. Backup your last years emails to other folder than inbox. Create new folder called Inbox2005 and move your emails dated before 2006 to the folder. It will help prevent your inbox folder becomes too large.

Hi! 1. I haven't changed anything or added anything on this computer. Last week, I opened the In Box on O/E 6.0 and the regular toolbar had disappeared (Find, Edit, Help etc.). In its place were icons with the Customize option. I did Alt F with no results. Didn't find help on MSN. 2. In the "receiving" screen, it can say I'm getting say 10 emails, but maybe only 8 will come in. Once today it said I'm getting 1 email and nothing came in. The only diverting filter I have is for some blocked emails that go directly to the Deleted folder, nothing else. What's going on! Don Rice

I lost all the e-mails in my Inbox because it prompted me to compress my files. This solution still worked for me though to get most (if not all) of my e-mails back! Thank you.

This hasnt worked for me and I dont know why... At first when I saw my inbox empty - thats exactly what I did - I checked the path and the size of the inbox folder was over 2gb. When I opened OE again it prompted me to compress which I unfortunately did thinking that it will make the old emails reappear. Thereafter the size of the inbox showed 57k

I've been trying to use the extractor but it is only showing me the last 10 emails downloaded. How do I now recover my old emails.

Someone please help... !!

#sanjay:

Do not copy the file to the C:\Document...\outlook express folder within windows explorer. You just need to mark and copy all the files from c:\Inbox from windows explorer and paste it in inbox folder within Outlook Express, do not paste it within Windows Explorer.

Give it a try. Good luck.

This was excellent! I searched all over the web, including Microsoft and this was the only information that saved my emails. The only thing is when I extracted the emails, they were saved as ".nws" files rather than ".eml" files, so they would not paste into my OE inbox while open. I changed the preferences on the program from ".nws" to ".eml" and it worked then. THANK YOU!!!!!

I found my Inbox.dbx file which is 336 MB. I ran the extraction tool but it does not extract any of the e-mails. Any ideas as to why it will not extract the e-mails would be helpful. I know that I did not compress the e-mails. On occassion however I will accidently select compression but stop the process immediately when I realize what is going on. Are partial compressions possible and could this be the problem?

I was able to extract the files to c:\inbox but I am unclear as to how to drag from within Windows Explorer to the "inbox" within Outlook Express -- Should Outlook Express have created another folder to drag and drop from? If so, I'm not seeing it. Any help you can provide is appreciated. Sincerely, Tony T.

Hi Laura,

Just find the one with the most recent date, or the one with the largest inbox.dbx file size.

On explorer, click on view | details

I would like to help.

Sometime long ago I had the same problem. All my inbox mails were simply gone.

What I did was import them back. And Voila. They all came back.

Here are the simple steps I did.

1. Open outlook express.

2. Go to Import and choose Messages

3. In the pop up that will appear choose Microsoft Outlook then click next

4. Profile name pop up appears and just click OK.

5. Another pop up appears and this time choose Inbox and click Next.

6. You're done. All your missing emails are back in your Inbox.

I can't get the program to finish the task. It crashes during Step 2, leaving a .txt file with 0 data in the c:\inbox.dbx folder, but no extracted emails. Any idea why it crashes before finishing the extraction???

At work with email i usually use-<a href="www.recoverytoolbox.com/dbx_extract.html">extracting dbx</a>,as is known tool is free, program extract dbx file tool can read damaged Outlook Express folders, extract messages from them and even recover previously deleted messages, can extract messages from damaged files located on another computer using your local area network, checks the integrity of a message and extracts messages together with all files attached to them, allows you to recover dbx files up to 4 Gb in size, that is it resolves the problem of 2Gb (dbx 2gb problem, dbxtract),program has a Batch extraction mode, which makes it possible to automate and speed up the process of extracting and saving messages (Outlook Express extraction, extract dbx files),software supported *.dbx file formats: MS Outlook Express 5, 5.5, 6,tool was seccussfully tested under Windows 2000/XP/2003.

# How to data recovery

Undelete needs the file system components intact to work. When they have been compromised stronger data recovery software or manual service repair will have to undelete or recover the files.
