Campus Launch Vista, I've got 5 free books.
Last Saturday, there was an event at Binus University, "campus launching windows vista". The attendants were mostly come from Binus. The 50th earliest attendants will get a book, either of Windows Vista from Elex Media or VB.NET from O'Reilly. That's why; there was a long queue out side the door. Hahaha... (Just like distributing "sembako").

Some of our community's geeks present some talk. The first session was about Windows Communication Foundation by Mr Norman. I could smell that most of the attendants felt confuse about the talk because I believe that not mostly were not developers. But I myself enjoy the session very much, WCF is cool!!! If I've got enough time, I will explore it for sure.

The second session was more funky that Mr Zeddy showed some interesting feature in windows vista like speech recognition, speech dictation, and of course his robot "Tom". It made the attendants said "WOW". But a few times, the machine didn't obey Mr Zeddy's voice, hehe...

During the break, the EO offered some gift for those who could answer the questions. The was a question about "slide-show in win vista". And also there was a question that "Mention the 4 speaker, where they are come from, and what topic that they deliver".  (Actually there were just 3 speaker stated on the announcement and poster, exclude Mr Adrian Godong). I came out to answer the question, The 3 speakers were mentioned by me. But I didn't know Mr Adrian before. Hehe... At last, I received 4 books of Windows Vista from Elex Media.

Next, Adrian talked about the windows vista security and at last Mr Agung Riyadi shared some of his experience as a CEO of an IT company about Web 2.0.

The end of the session was still covered by some question and gift. Mr Norman stated a question about "What file should we include if we are going to use WCF?" It seemed like nobody could tell (Actually I know the answer, but I couldn't stand up anymore, I just got 4 books. haha). Then I told my friend the answer that's "System.ServiceModel", and she got it.

Next question from Mr Agung about "Mention 3 kinds of characteristic about Web 2.0!".

Immediately, I told my girlfriend the answer "those are Ajax, RSS, and Blog". She stood up and got it too. Hahaha...

Before dismissing, the attendants grab out the price, most of them interest in VB.NET from O'reilly. I got it too.

So, I got 5 free books from the event + Mr Norman lent me a precious book "CLR via C#". (Thanks, Man!). Totally, there were six books.

My bag was so heavy, hehe...

Is Javascript an OO Language?

Regarding to previous discussion in the dotnet mailing list about "Is Javascript an OO language?", I decided to post my opinion about that. That discussion was really interesting.

Some of the "Javascript Die-Hard geeks" defended so hard about their Javascript is an OO language. They said that Javascript could achieve any OO criterias, so it should be consider as an OO language.

Some of them contended that "Javascript is not an OO". They said that maybe JS could achieve OO behaviour, but via hack. It don't have any OO nature, it just have the ability to deceive the OO.

A good analogy from Mr Norman about "Bird and Bat" was really interesting. It stated that common OO languages (C++, Java, C#, etc) are bird and Javascript is bat. Haha..

For me, it is better to define "OO Programming language criteria", in other words "What criteria should a programming language to have, in order to reach as OO language" first. About the criteria, a version from A could be different from another version from B. That causes the never-ending debat Smile (just like recent debating in our local community).  Maybe some international standarization (maybe like ECMA, W3C, etc) have to stand up andwell define it.

After that is well-defined, next we just determine that if Javascript (or maybe others langauge) as OO.

Back to ASP :-)
Most of people begin in ASP and VB6 before step in to .NET. I myself, vice versa. Big Smile I had learned .NET first, then later came with VB6.

Last week I began a Bina Nusantara Cooperate website (http://www.binus.edu/) with ASP.NET and C#  (was developed by ASP). This is not a huge or enterprise project, where there is no much transaction, but more about information about Bina Nusantara Foundation and its business unit like BiNus University, BiNus Center, BiNus Career, BiNus School, etc.

Actually I don't really like the new design Smile (in purple). Because, it was previously developed with ASP, I have to convert the ASP script to C#. Huh... When I look at the ASP VBScript, I found that that was wacky!!! It made my dizzy, spaghetti code man! It almost took me more than a day to convert just about 4 or 5 functions. I found some obstacles like:

  • Of course, I don't familiar with ASP VBScript coz I am in C#. But it doesn't really matter; it is just grammar and syntax.
  • Sometimes, it didn't declare the variable, so that it could be filled with any data type.
  • The programming style! ASP VBScript is scripting, everything mixes up with HTML. I get used with the ASP.NET code behind style.
  • Library - functions.
  • Etc.

Luckily, we have uncle Google. It really helped me. Now, the project currently is on the way. Let get back to work!!!!
