1st Indonesian Xbox 360 Game: MVP Xbox Supports Local Software Economy

I am supporting my friend's venture, Arief of the Imagine Cup 2008 Rural Winner fame, in the Indonesian Game Show (held from Wednesday-Sunday, 12-16 November 2008 at Jakarta Convenction Center). My support is by lending them my Xbox 360 Elite so that Arief can show off his brand-new-cool XNA Game :)

Luckily, Arief came to my house to test Deployment to Xbox, because it turns out a new Xbox update was pushed today (to play XNA Games on the Xbox, the XNA bootloader needs to connect to Xbox Live first -- if there's update and we choose not to install it, then all Xbox Live services will fail to start. Imagine if you have 80MB New Xbox Experience Update pushed via GPRS :)

Without further ado, here are the photos of Arief and his game, Ponporon!:

01
Ponporon! Welcome Screen -- very impressive I must say.

03
Dangdutan Mini Game == Dance Dance Revolution, cool localization moniker :)

Arief, like me, is starting his own company called Agate Studio, focusing on game development. No local market you say? If there's no market here, then export :)  I believe Arief and his company will be successful, like all the smart people have become. By opening a booth in the Indonesian Game Show, he is exposing his company and opening up new channels.

I wish I could help more, but with the current load of day-coding and night-coding I'm currently in, I can only lend my Xbox 360 Elite to Arief. I belive Arief's company will be:

  • The Only One with Game created with XNA Game Studio Express.
  • The Only One with Game deployed on Xbox 360 Console.

I hope Microsoft is watching Arief and his company closely... it's this kind of company that needs assistance, and the kind of company that can make Indonesia programmers proud. Microsoft Indonesia's Developer & Platform Group has a program called Local Software Economy, in short making innovation happens locally and creating a vibrant domestic software market. Arief and his company is a jewel in the Local Software Economy...

Below more of Ponporon! eye-candy, grabbed from Agate's website:

Unfortunately, due to the sheer size (1GB), this game cannot be pushed for Xbox Live Community Game , although I'm pushing Arief to downsize it to Community Game appropriate size (max 150MB). If he succeeds, then it's like SMS-money.... 1000 Xbox gamers download his game, and roughly that equals to 1000 x $10 = $10,000 (though Arief already got $10,000 from winning Imagine Cup 2007 Rural :)

So, you think Game Development is not a serious business yet? Start exploring game-development for your night-coding activities, and leave that boring Enterprise Line-of-Business Applications for day-coding only :)
