WP7: Dissecting we.Muslim app | Part 3 - Icon Sizes

Now, icons are the first thing users will see after buying your app, so make them look polished.

Application Icon

Application icon’s size is 62 x 62 pixels. If you don’t specify one, the Background/Tile Icon will be downsized as the app icon.

To specify your app icon, after drag-n-dropping the AppIcon.png, make sure your AppIcon.png has these properties set:

SS058

Then right-click your Project Properties and set the Icon from the dropdown:

SS059

Now many people make the background of app icon transparent. The result you will get it this:

AppIcon_IEvsWeMuslim

Now my app will look like any other app a kid just deployed from Visual Studio :)

So let’s make the app icon background with a touch of gradient and make it stand out, shall we?

AppIcon-PERFECT!

Tile Icon

Tile/Background icon is officially 173x173 pixels, but you have to take the app title and whether you want to use the top space to push for text updates.

For we.Muslim, app, I found below specs is the sweet spot:

TileIcon_w100pxLogo

I will use the top space above to push for reminder: “Next: Isha 7.40pm”

To set your Tile Icon, drag-n-drop your TileIcon.png, set the properties the same as for App Icon (Build Action=Content and Copy if Newer), then set this in your Project Properties:

SS060

Marketplace Icons

According to the Windows Phone 7 Application Certification Requirements doc, section 4.5 you need these additional icon sizes:

Small icon 99 x 99 px (Marketplace accessed from the phone)

99 BG

Large icon 173 x 173 px (Marketplace accessed from the phone)

173 BG

Large icon 200 x 200 px (Marketplace accessed from Zune software)

200 BG
